The West Frisian Islands (Waddeneilanden)

The West Frisian Islands (Waddeneilanden) are a chain of five pearls spread across the North Sea, stretching from Texel in the west to Schiermonnikoog in the east. Each island has its own unique personality, but they all share the raw, refreshing beauty of the Wadden Sea.

The islands in brief

The chain consists of Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog.

History

These islands were shaped by the relentless North Sea. Historically, they were home to whalers and merchant sailors. During the Golden Age, Terschelling was an important maritime hub. You can still see the "Commandeurs woningen" (captains' houses) on Ameland, a tribute to their rich seafaring past.

Nature

The islands are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The landscape is a mix of massive dunes, salt marshes and the "Wadden" - the mudflats that appear when the tide goes out.

Island Life: Activities and Shops

If you're planning a trip, prepare for a quiet holiday.

Wadlopen (Wad Walk)

This is the quintessential island experience. When the tide is low, you can literally walk across the seabed. It's messy, exhausting and incredibly rewarding.

Cycling

Cars are limited on Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog, making fietsen (biking) the primary way to get around. The islands are crisscrossed by pristine cycle paths.

Shops

Don't expect huge shopping malls. Instead, you'll find charming shops in villages like Den Burg (Texel) or West-Terschelling. Look for local wool products on Texel and cranberry-based goods on Terschelling.

Typical foods: A taste of the sea

The local diet is rugged and dictated by what the land and sea offer.

Food: Texels Skuumkoppe
Description: A famous dark wheat beer from Texel's local brewery.

Food: Cranberries
Description: Legend has it that a barrel of cranberries washed ashore on Terschelling in 1845; now they're a staple in pies and jams.

Food: Texel Lamb
Description: Known for its slightly salty taste because the sheep graze on salt marshes.

Food: Nobeltje
Description: A sweet, potent liqueur from Ameland, perfect for warming up after a windy walk.

Festivals and traditions

The islands hold on to their traditions, often involving fire or masks to ward off winter spirits.

Oerol Festival (Terschelling)

A world-famous site-specific theatre and arts festival every June that transforms the entire island into a stage.

Sunderum (Terschelling) / Klozum (Schiermonnikoog)

Midwinter traditions where locals dress in elaborate masks and costumes to "scare away" the spirits of the past year.

Around Texel

The world's largest catamaran race, held annually in June.
